Quick coverage reference

One US ton covers about 165 sq ft at 1 in deep / about 82 sq ft at 2 in deep (at 145 lb/cu ft).

How it's calculated

  • Compacted hot-mix asphalt density is about 145 lb/cu ft (= 3915 lb/cu yd); roughly 140โ€“150 depending on mix gradation. We use the industry-standard 145.
  • Residential driveway surface: 2โ€“3 in (compacted); heavy-duty or commercial: 3โ€“4 in; overlay on existing pavement: 1.5โ€“2 in.

How much asphalt do I need?

Hot-mix asphalt is sold by weight (the ton), so density drives the estimate. The quantity is the paved area multiplied by the compacted thickness, converted to tons using asphalt's density of about 145 lb per cubic foot.

In practice: tons = area (sq ft) ร— thickness (in) รท 12 ร— 145 รท 2000. At a typical 2-inch driveway thickness, one ton covers roughly 82 sq ft. Enter your area and thickness above and the calculator returns tons (and tonnes) ready to quote against a supplier's per-ton price.

How to measure for asphalt

Measure the surface

Length ร— width in feet for the area to be paved. Break irregular drives into rectangles and total them.

Set the thickness

2โ€“3 inches compacted for a residential driveway; 3โ€“4 inches for heavier or commercial use; 1.5โ€“2 inches for an overlay.

Read tons needed

The calculator converts area and thickness to tons using standard hot-mix density โ€” the unit asphalt is sold in.

Add for compaction & waste

Loose mix compresses when rolled. Order around 10% extra so the finished thickness is right.

Asphalt thickness & buying tips

Thickness by load

Cars are fine on 2โ€“3 inches over a good base; trucks and commercial traffic need 3โ€“4 inches to avoid cracking.

The base matters most

Even perfect thickness fails over a weak base. A compacted gravel sub-base is what makes asphalt last.

Plan the pour

Hot mix cools fast and must be laid and rolled quickly, so order the full amount at once rather than in small batches.

Asphalt calculator FAQ

How much does a ton of asphalt cover?

About 165 sq ft at 1 inch thick, or roughly 82 sq ft at the common 2-inch driveway thickness, based on 145 lb/cu ft density.

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

2โ€“3 inches of compacted asphalt over a solid gravel base is standard for residential driveways.

How much does asphalt weigh per cubic foot?

Compacted hot-mix asphalt weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot (around 3,900 lb per cubic yard).

How do I convert asphalt tons to area?

Divide the tons your supplier quotes by the coverage per ton at your thickness. The calculator does the reverse โ€” area and thickness to tons.

Should I add extra asphalt?

Yes. Order roughly 10% over the calculated amount to allow for compaction, edges, and minor waste during laying.
