Quick coverage reference

Area needed = room area ร— (1 + waste%); boxes = round up (area needed รท coverage per box).

How it's calculated

  • Straight lay: add 5โ€“10% waste; diagonal, herringbone, or complex rooms: 15โ€“20%; pattern matching is higher. Default is 10%.

How much flooring do I need?

Flooring is sold by the box, each covering a set number of square feet. You start from the room's area, add a waste allowance for cuts and mistakes, then divide by the coverage per box.

The formula is area needed = room area (sq ft) ร— (1 + waste%), then boxes = area needed รท coverage per box (rounded up). A 10% waste factor is standard for straight installs; complex rooms and diagonal patterns need more. Enter your room size, waste, and the box coverage printed on the product above to get the number of boxes to buy.

How to measure for flooring

Measure each room

Length ร— width in feet. Measure rooms separately and add closets and alcoves so nothing is missed.

Add a waste factor

10% for straight-lay planks or tiles; 15โ€“20% for diagonal layouts, herringbone, or rooms with lots of corners.

Enter box coverage

Read the square footage per box off the flooring you have chosen and enter it so the calculator can count boxes.

Round up to whole boxes

You can only buy whole boxes, so the result rounds up. Keep a spare box for future repairs.

Flooring waste & buying tips

Pattern sets the waste

Straight planks waste little; diagonal and herringbone layouts cut more at the edges, so budget 15โ€“20%.

Keep attic stock

Order an extra box beyond the calculation. Matching the same dye lot later for a repair is often impossible.

Mind the direction

Long planks usually run the length of the room or toward the main light source โ€” plan layout before ordering.

Flooring calculator FAQ

How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?

Add 10% for a standard straight install, or 15โ€“20% for diagonal patterns, herringbone, or rooms with many cuts.

How do I calculate how many boxes of flooring I need?

Multiply the room area by 1 + your waste percentage, then divide by the square feet per box and round up.

Why does the result round up to whole boxes?

Flooring is sold only in full boxes, so any fractional box becomes a whole one. The leftover doubles as repair stock.

Should I measure each room separately?

Yes. Measure and total rooms individually โ€” including closets โ€” rather than estimating the whole floor at once, for accuracy.

Do I include closets and doorways?

Include closets and any area that gets flooring. Add the threshold/doorway areas too if the same flooring continues through them.
