Quick coverage reference

Single paver area = length(in) ร— width(in) รท 144 sq ft; pavers = round up (paved area ร— (1 + waste) รท single-paver area). Example: a 4ร—8 in paver โ‰ˆ 0.22 sq ft each โ†’ 100 sq ft needs about 450 pavers (before waste).

How it's calculated

  • Straight lay: add 10% waste (breakage/cuts); diagonal, herringbone, and other multi-piece patterns: 20% (more corner cuts). Default is 10%.

How many pavers do I need?

Pavers are counted by the piece, so the estimate is your patio area divided by the area each paver covers, plus a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.

First find one paver's area: paver sq ft = length (in) ร— width (in) รท 144. A 4ร—8-inch paver covers about 0.22 sq ft, so 100 sq ft needs roughly 450 of them before waste. The calculator adds your waste percentage and returns the number of pavers โ€” enter the coverage of your chosen paver above and pick a waste factor based on the laying pattern.

How to measure for pavers

Measure the patio

Length ร— width in feet for the area you are paving. Split L-shapes into rectangles and total them.

Find one paver's area

Multiply the paver length ร— width in inches, then divide by 144 to get its coverage in square feet.

Choose a waste factor

Add 10% for a straight pattern, or 20% for diagonal and herringbone layouts that need more cuts.

Read pavers needed

The calculator returns the total number of pavers including waste, ready to order.

Paver planning tips

Pattern drives waste

Straight grids waste little; diagonal and herringbone patterns cut more pavers at the edges, so allow 20%.

Don't forget the base

Pavers sit on compacted gravel topped with about an inch of bedding sand โ€” calculate those separately with our gravel and sand calculators.

Order spares once

Buy your full quantity (plus waste) in one batch so colors match โ€” dye lots vary between production runs.

Paver calculator FAQ

How many pavers do I need per square foot?

It depends on size. A 4ร—8-inch paver covers 0.22 sq ft, so you need about 4.5 per sq ft; a 12ร—12-inch paver covers 1 sq ft, so one per sq ft.

How many 4ร—8 pavers are in 100 square feet?

About 450 pavers before waste. Add 10โ€“20% for cuts, which brings it to roughly 495โ€“540.

How much extra should I buy for cuts?

Add 10% for a straight layout and 20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns that require more cutting.

How do I calculate one paver's coverage?

Multiply its length and width in inches and divide by 144. A 6ร—6-inch paver is 36 รท 144 = 0.25 sq ft.

What goes under pavers?

A compacted gravel base (typically 4โ€“6 inches) topped with about 1 inch of bedding sand, so the surface stays level and drains.
