How many pavers do I need?
Pavers are counted by the piece, so the estimate is your patio area divided by the area each paver covers, plus a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
First find one paver's area: paver sq ft = length (in) × width (in) ÷ 144. A 4×8-inch paver covers about 0.22 sq ft, so 100 sq ft needs roughly 450 of them before waste. It depends on size. A 4×8-inch paver covers 0.22 sq ft, so you need about 4.5 per sq ft; a 12×12-inch paver covers 1 sq ft, so one per sq ft.
How many 4×8 pavers are in 100 square feet?
About 450 pavers before waste. Add 10–20% for cuts, which brings it to roughly 495–540.
How much extra should I buy for cuts?
Add 10% for a straight layout and 20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns that require more cutting.
How do I calculate one paver's coverage?
Multiply its length and width in inches and divide by 144. A 6×6-inch paver is 36 ÷ 144 = 0.25 sq ft.
What goes under pavers?
A compacted gravel base (typically 4–6 inches) topped with about 1 inch of bedding sand, so the surface stays level and drains.
