Drywall Calculator for Walls

Estimate drywall sheets for walls.

For walls, the area is the room perimeter × ceiling height. Standard 4×8 ft sheets cover 32 sq ft each (the calculator starts there). Most installers do not subtract small door and window openings — the offcuts rarely reuse.

Tip: Hang wall sheets horizontally in most homes — it puts the tapered seam at a comfortable height and uses fewer joints.

How it's calculated

A standard 4×8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft; a 4×12 ft sheet covers 48 sq ft. Sheets = round up (wall + ceiling area × (1 + waste) ÷ sq ft per sheet).

Drywall Calculator for Walls FAQ

How many sheets of drywall for a wall?

Divide the wall area (perimeter × height) by 32 sq ft per sheet and add about 10% for cuts. A 12 × 12 ft room's walls need roughly 14 sheets.

Should drywall be hung horizontally or vertically?

Horizontally in most homes — it reduces seams and places the joint at a convenient taping height. Commercial walls are often vertical.
