Quick coverage reference
A single roll covers about 25–30 sq ft of usable wall after trimming (wallpaper is usually sold as double rolls). Rolls = wall area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per roll.
How it's calculated
- Add about 15% for trimming and pattern matching; plain or random-match papers need less, large pattern repeats need more.

</script>How much wallpaper do I need?
Wallpaper is sold by the roll, but most rolls are packaged as double rolls. A single roll covers about 25–30 sq ft of usable wall once you trim and match the pattern. Start from the wall area, add a generous waste allowance for pattern matching, then divide by the coverage per roll.
Use rolls = wall area (sq ft) × (1 + waste%) ÷ coverage per roll, rounded up. Wall area is the room perimeter × wall height. Add about 15% for trimming and pattern repeat — large repeats waste more, plain papers less. Don't subtract small doors and windows; the offcuts rarely reuse.
How to measure for wallpaper
Measure the walls
Perimeter of the room × wall height gives the wall area. Total each wall if heights differ.
Add for pattern repeat
Keep about 15% for trimming and matching. Big pattern repeats waste more; random-match papers waste less.
Enter roll coverage
Read the usable coverage off the roll (often 25–30 sq ft per single roll) and enter it.
Buy in double rolls
Rolls are usually sold in double-roll bolts. The calculator counts single rolls — round up to whole double rolls when ordering.
Wallpaper buying tips
A large repeat means more paper is cut away to line up each strip. Check the repeat size and lean toward the higher waste end.
Wallpaper is priced per single roll but sold in double-roll bolts. Always order whole bolts and match the run number.
Like dye lots, wallpaper has batch (run) numbers. Order all you need at once so color and pattern align.
Wallpaper calculator FAQ
How many square feet does a roll of wallpaper cover?
A single roll covers about 25–30 sq ft of usable wall after trimming. Wallpaper is usually sold as double rolls, covering roughly twice that.
How do I calculate wallpaper rolls?
Multiply the wall area (perimeter × height) by 1 + your waste percentage, then divide by the usable coverage per roll and round up.
How much extra wallpaper should I buy?
Add about 15% for trimming and pattern matching. Large pattern repeats need more; plain or random-match papers need less.
What is the difference between a single and double roll?
Wallpaper is priced per single roll but packaged as double rolls (bolts). A double roll has less waste because there are fewer interruptions.
Do I subtract doors and windows?
For small openings, no — the leftover covers the waste. Subtract only large openings, and always order whole double rolls.
