Quick coverage reference

A standard sod roll is 2×5 ft = 10 sq ft; a pallet holds roughly 50 rolls (≈ 450–500 sq ft). Rolls = round up (lawn area × (1 + waste) ÷ 10).

How it's calculated

  • Add about 5% for trimming around curves, beds, and edges; more for a yard with lots of curves.

How much sod do I need?

Sod is sold by the roll and the pallet. A standard roll is 2 × 5 ft = 10 sq ft, and a pallet holds roughly 50 rolls, covering about 450–500 sq ft. The estimate is your lawn area plus a small allowance for trimming, divided by the coverage per roll.

Use rolls = lawn area (sq ft) × (1 + waste%) ÷ 10, rounded up. A 1,000 sq ft lawn needs about 105 rolls (just over two pallets) once you add 5% for cuts around curves and beds. Order full pallets where you can — they're cheaper per square foot than loose rolls.

How to measure for sod

Measure the lawn

Length × width of each area to be sodded. Break curved yards into rectangles and circles and total them.

Add for trimming

Keep about 5% for the offcuts when fitting sod around beds, paths, and curves. Curvier yards need a little more.

Read rolls and pallets

The calculator returns rolls at 10 sq ft each; divide by ~50 to estimate pallets for ordering.

Lay it fresh

Sod is perishable. Order it to arrive the day you lay it, and keep the soil prepared and watered in advance.

Sod buying & laying tips

Prep the soil first

Sod knits to loose, raked topsoil. Add 4–6 inches of good soil first if your grade is poor — calculate it with our topsoil calculator.

Buy by the pallet

Full pallets (≈ 450–500 sq ft) are cheaper per square foot than loose rolls, so round your order up to whole pallets where it makes sense.

Lay it the same day

Sod heats and dries on the pallet within a day or two. Schedule delivery for installation day and water it in immediately.

Sod calculator FAQ

How much area does a roll of sod cover?

A standard sod roll is 2 × 5 ft, covering 10 sq ft. Sizes vary slightly by supplier, so confirm before ordering.

How many rolls of sod are on a pallet?

About 50 rolls per pallet, covering roughly 450–500 sq ft depending on the farm and roll size.

How much sod do I need for 1000 square feet?

About 100 rolls at 10 sq ft each — roughly 105 with 5% added for trimming, or just over two pallets.

How do I measure my yard for sod?

Split the lawn into rectangles and circles, measure each in feet, total the square footage, and add about 5% for cuts around curves and beds.

How long can sod sit before laying?

Lay sod within 24 hours of delivery — sooner in hot weather. Rolled sod heats up and yellows quickly on the pallet.
