Quick coverage reference

A standard modular brick wall takes about 7 bricks per sq ft of face (including mortar joints), so each brick covers about 0.143 sq ft. Bricks = wall area × (1 + waste) ÷ coverage per brick.

How it's calculated

  • Add about 10% for cuts, breakage, and corners; reclaimed or non-standard brick may need more.

How many bricks do I need?

Bricks are counted by the piece, and a standard modular brick wall takes about 7 bricks per square foot of face — including the mortar joints. That means each brick effectively covers about 0.143 sq ft. Start from the wall face area, add a waste allowance for cuts and breakage, then divide by the coverage per brick.

Use bricks = wall area (sq ft) × (1 + waste%) ÷ 0.143, rounded up. A 100 sq ft wall needs roughly 700 bricks, or about 770 with 10% waste. Different brick sizes change the count — larger bricks cover more face per piece — so adjust the coverage if you're not using standard modular brick.

How to measure for brick

Measure the wall face

Length × height of the wall in feet. Total each wall section and subtract large openings like doors and windows.

Confirm the brick size

Standard modular brick gives about 7 per sq ft (0.143 sq ft each). Larger or thinner brick changes the per-brick coverage.

Add a waste factor

Keep about 10% for cut bricks at corners and openings, plus breakage during delivery and laying.

Read bricks needed

The calculator returns the total brick count including waste, ready to order by the pallet.

Brick buying tips

Single vs. double wythe

A single-brick veneer uses about 7 per sq ft; a solid double-wythe wall doubles that. Count each layer of brick.

Mortar joints count

The 7-per-sq-ft figure already includes a standard 3/8 in mortar joint. Wider joints mean slightly fewer bricks.

Order by the pallet

Brick ships on pallets of roughly 500. Round your order up to whole pallets and keep a few spares for repairs.

Brick calculator FAQ

How many bricks per square foot?

About 7 standard modular bricks per square foot of wall face, including the mortar joints.

How many bricks do I need for a 100 square foot wall?

Roughly 700 bricks for a single-brick veneer, or about 770 once you add 10% for cuts and breakage.

How much extra brick should I order?

Add about 10% for cut bricks at corners and openings, plus breakage. Reclaimed or non-standard brick may need more.

Does the mortar joint affect the brick count?

Yes. The 7-per-sq-ft figure assumes a standard 3/8 in joint. Wider joints use slightly fewer bricks per square foot.

How many bricks are on a pallet?

A typical pallet (cube) holds around 500 bricks, though it varies by brick size and supplier.
